07/04/2004 - Las Vegas
Los Angeles is the unreal. Las Vegas is the surreal. A bizarre place! The American Ibiza of gambling. Jill was repulsed immediately by the tack, the sleaze and the brashness. I told her she was taking it too seriously. It’s a theme park of casinos-cum-hotels-cum-shopping malls. The Vegas Strip is a place you’re only one block away from anywhere else in the world: New York, Paris, Monte Carlo, Venice, Egypt, Morocco, the Stratosphere. Each casino designed and created to look and feel like some other place. Visited Venice at the Venetian, complete with indoor Grand Canal and Gondolas, Morocco at the Aladdin with Medina and indoor thunderstorm with rain, past the Eiffel Tower at Paris, Sphinx and Pyramid at Luxor and Statue of Liberty at New York, New York, I love it! Of course we lost our money, as presumably most people do. I did win $10, but Jill soon lost it, as I did later my original $10. Oh well! Perhaps we should’ve done as one British guy did recently when he bet everything he owned on a single spin of the roulette wheel. Over GBP100,000 on Red. And he won. Doubled his money! Guts, stupidity or desperation? Not sure, but that win could’ve kept us travelling for a little while longer. Looks like I’ll be finding a job when we return. |
