30/03/2004 - Thoughts on Rarotonga, Cook Islands

Pacific island paradise! For some people, perhaps. Fine for a few days but to live here a different matter. Could get a tad tedious! Days spent on beach. Not much else to do, and not much else kids wanted to do. Could explore verdant mountainous interior, but haven’t. Bussed into town and round whole island, that took a couple of hours. Other than that, it’s been reading, swimming, sleeping, making sure we don’t get sunburned, avoid getting sand everywhere, and generally relaxing in warmth. Glad for heat and humidity after five weeks of typical British summer weather in New Zealand. Had rain but sandwiched between hot sunny days. One less enjoyable feature is cockerels. Came to dislike these images of tranquil countryside in SE Asia. The reason for several fitful nights’ sleep! Don’t crow just at daybreak, the general misconception, crow any hour day or night. Ugh! Another feature is ants. Drop food, leave crumbs or abandon dirty dishes and there’s soon a legion of ants infesting any leftover morsel. Very annoying! However, beachside is amazing. Clear warm water, shallow lagoon, white sandy beach, fish swimming at your feet as you paddle, offshore waves crashing the protective reef. A perfect pacific beach island image! Arriving here we went back in time, literally! Crossed International Date Line and gained a day. Arrived before we left. Now 12 hours behind the UK, and no longer in front. The start of the return half of our round the world journey.
