12/03/2004 - Lake Taupo, New Zealand
Experienced another earthquake today. Worse than Lombok, 7 on the Richter Scale. Don’t worry though, only a simulator [photo]. Part of a Volcanic Information Centre. Smaller than expected but involving and fun. Kids amused for couple of hours, experiencing earthquake, building earth’s tectonic puzzle [photo], watching videos, and playing with various displays [photo]. Only one of several sights today. Viewed world’s first geothermal-steam power station. Gleaming metal pipes criss-crossing landscape mile after mile [photo]. More volcanic spectacle of craters [photo], steaming fumeroles [photo] and glooping mud pools. And, a river dam and narrow gorge rapids. Lake Taupo area, great! Loads to see and do, for not much money. Arrived yesterday and visited waterfall. Different from others on trip, short and stubby. Awesome power! Immense volumes of water funnelled through narrow breach then thunders over small drop [photo]. Supposedly canoeists kayak down it. Would’ve loved to see one. Totally mad! Made me hanker for my boat. Walked riverbank to hot spring. Leala and Ben dipped in. Too hot near source, too cold in the river. Under the bridge was just right [photo]. Overnighted at best campsite so far for kids. Unfortunately no cabins so tent time once again. Kids in raptures though, playground, swimming pools and bouncy pillow, similar to bouncy castle but without the castle [photo]. So big we all went on it. Boundless fun! Once worn out on that, into the pool. Heated of course. And, when big pool started feeling chilly, had to slide into warmer little pool. Ah, bliss! An advantage of living in volcanic area I guess. Currently on Bay of Plenty coast in superb campsite cabin, and with another bouncy pillow. Yippee! |
