03/03/2004 - Glacier Country, New Zealand

Hooray, sun! Prolonged sun, blue skies and warmth. Ironic given we’re on wet precipitous side of Southern Alps. Time running out with car so pushed on quicker than originally planned. Still found time for afternoon tea, and more distinctive diners. Contemplating a book, "A Guide to Characterful Cafés of New Zealand". Have loads of material! On West Coast, in Glacier Country to see rivers of ice [photo]. Outstanding: weather brilliant, scenery stunning, accommodation excellent. The New Zealand I’d envisaged [photo]. Even Jill’s beginning to enjoy it. Spent last night under canvas but no hardship given weather. Popular place and no cabins within budget. Tonight managed cabin at top site. Log cabin [photo], en suite, kitchenette, bunks and a double, plus usual communal camp facilities. All we need. Everything pristine, almost perfect. Exception, no kids’ playground as advertised. Still to be built. Ohhh! Also has direct access to beach with masses of driftwood. Tried making statues and art, generally messing about. Kids loved it. Ben found a playmate, 3 year old Andrew from Aberdeen. Really hit it off, play fighting in lounge, lots of rough and tumble, and den building on beach [photo]. Had great fun together. Visited two glaciers. Both easily accessible. Walked within short distance of glacier face [photo]. Leala so impressed, keen to climb one. But, warnings quashed her ambition. Gutting! Also walked longer route to higher viewpoint; crossed river by swing-bridge [photo], tramped through rainforest [photo], scrambled over boulders and piggybacked a river crossing [photo]. Great fun! Hopefully ponchos will now be assigned to bottom of rucsac once again. May sun shine on.
