01/03/2004 - Queenstown, New Zealand
It’s stopped raining. Yippee! Ben and me now down with colds. Arranged lodge cabin for couple of nights. A bunk room, four built-in bunks nothing else. Weren’t fussy, happy with four walls and a roof. Respite from "unseasonal" weather. Tent drying out. Others in same boat doing likewise. Local tourist information centre trying to put good spin on weather, notice read "Highly unseasonal weather but still a great time to see Milford Sound". Purported worst February in 150 years, traditionally best month of year. Sun’s been out today. Tried walk round nearby Glenorchy. Ben not interested. Went short distance to river and gave up [photo] [photo]. Made kids some driftwood toys to stimulate interest: Ben a wooden boat [photo], Leala a ‘javelin arrow’. Ended up having fun. In what’s described as adrenaline capital of New Zealand, possibly the world. Initial impression, a tourist hole. Not impressed. Couple of days on, it’s not so bad. Setting, and surrounding mountains and lakeside, impressively picturesque [photo]. Town’s lake side, attractive and peaceful [photo]. Loads of adrenaline activities available, we’ve chosen none. Visited original Bungy Jump bridge, 42m (102ft) [photo]. Newer jumps much higher. On arrival, group of three jumped and splashed the river below. Next watched a single girl jump [photo]. Probably her first ever time. Looked very apprehensive. Leala said she’d like to do it, but thought we wouldn’t press her. Treated ourselves to Pizza Hut dinner yesterday. Kids had eat-all-you-want meals, Jill and I shared a pizza. Made most of the kids’ offer, had several helpings of theirs too. |
