28/02/2004 - Te Anau, New Zealand
Bloody miserable. Rid of high winds. Now rain. Constant, persistent, soaking rain. Jill and Leala have colds, hankies now included in shopping basket. Reason for visit, world-renowned Milford Sound Fiordland views, obscured by cloud [photo]. Contemplated not bothering with 4-hour round-trip. But, thought couldn’t come this far. Awesome scenic drive, even with cloud [photo]. Not much to do when you arrive though, without spending money that is. Did couple of short walks, donned ponchos [photo] [photo], sheltered in café over tea and meat pie. Generally, people on organised trips, for cruise or water activity. Opted for self-drive visit given constraints of kids, weather and budget (not necessarily in that order!). Still, worth the effort. En-route Leala and I realised New Zealand ambition, step on summertime (huh!) snow and ice [photo]. Scrambled up mountainside to pockets of packed ice. Returned wet but satisfied with snowball for Jill. Overnight accommodation once again is tent. No camp cabins available. Tent repairs worked, and it’s proven it’s waterproof - very! Consolation is 5-star campground. Amazing standard of facilities. Everything immaculate: pristine camp kitchen [photo], unsullied shower block, gleaming outside barbecues [photo], cosy lodge-style lounge with satellite TV. Kids at home on sofa goggling to Sky [photo]. Inspired, yesterday had barbecue treat of steak dinner and bottle of wine. Mmm! |
