16/02/2004 - Thoughts on Western Australia
The expected easier half of our 6-month trip has had a bad start. Thoughts and memories of Western Australia tainted by an accident from the top-draw of campervan crashes. Our freedom to travel the open roads of WA ‘rolling’ to an abrupt stop after 11 days, 1200km North of Perth in the outback of beyond. Driving along, animal jumps into view, we’re off the road, try to correct, thought I had, 360 degrees later realised I hadn’t. Oh dear! Campervan a write-off! Nobody injured or seriously hurt (all that really matters!) but Australian budget blown and enthusiasm temporarily exhausted. End of our open-road adventure through Western Australia for this occasion. What we saw and experienced though, fantastic. A place to come back to. Perth: spacious, clean, orderly and efficient. Climate: at times perfect, other times (at 40.6 C) perhaps a bit too hot. Sights: the park, the gardens, the buildings, the zoo, the waterside, the cityscape, the views. Wonderful! Outside Perth: the landscapes, the beaches, the sea, the roads, the wildlife. Unique! And the distances. Immense! A place for exploring. Also hospitality, enjoyed traditional ‘Aussie Bar-be’ thanks to new friends Janet, John, Jesse and Emily, we met in Bali. They even let us "put another prawn on the bar-be". What else! |
