Back in Perth early after campervan excursion went awry. Expected easier half of 6-month trip has started badly. An accident from the top-draw of campervan crashes, after only 11 days, 1200km North of Perth in the outback of beyond. Driving along, animal jumps into view, we’re off the road, try to correct, thought I had, 360 degrees later realised I hadn’t. Oh dear! Campervan a write-off. End of our open-road adventure through Western Australia for this occasion. Nobody injured or seriously hurt (all that really matters!) but Australian budget blown and enthusiasm temporarily exhausted. Written off further adventures in WA, moving on to New Zealand early. The Australia budget spent extricating ourselves back to Perth. No assistance from the van hire company. New van available from Perth but no help getting you there, even with full insurance. Something they don’t tell you beforehand. Basically, van irreparable you’re on your own. Options limited so flew back. An experience in itself. Smallest plane so far on trip, twin-prop 24-seater, similar to private jet you see on movies, couldn’t stand fully upright. Felt every isobar, anticyclone, pressure ridge and weather front we passed through. Ben slept the whole flight. One casualty of the crash was the digital camera, so no photo’s of van or plane. Pity! Might have to hunt out a replacement.
