  09/02/2004 - Monkey Mia

1200km North of Perth in World Heritage area of Shark’s Bay. A number of natural phenomena. Here for one in particular, for kids to see wild dolphins at Monkey Mia. Amazing, come so close. At times brush your leg. Not allowed to touch though, strict rules. Kids amazed. Even Ben entranced for a while. But soon realised and remembered he had important digging to do on the beach. Extra special, Leala was chosen to feed one a fish. She was so pleased. Made her day. Campsite is fantastic too, contrary to guidebook. Pitch only yards from beach. Heat intense as always, fortunately refreshing breeze, but still constantly looking for shade. Drove up from Kalbarri, 400km. Roads unerringly straight, not much thought needed to build these: point A, point B, ruler a line between, and plough through the intervening scrub-bush outback. On into the distance, broken only by apparent pool of ‘heat haze’ water. A mirage! Taking driving easy not trying to do too much. Make sure don’t doze off. Not much to see for large stretches, no traffic and no change of scenery. Great having campervan, and especially a fridge. Stop when you need or want, have bite to eat or just a cold drink. Great!
