23/01/2004 - Amed, East Bali
Driven to the more remote East coast of Bali and yet another unimpressive beach [photo]. En route here from Candidasa stopped at a water palace. Unfortunately my patience with the Indonesian hassle-factor snapped (again!). Parked the jeep, got out and immediately we had a chaperone. I said nothing. Got to the entrance and paid fee. We went in, he followed. That was it, time to confront him, my tirade of questions flew out: "Who are you?", "What do you want?", "Are you an official guide?", "Do we have to have a guide to visit?", "Are we allowed to walk around on our own?", "How much are you expecting?". As I suspected he was an ‘unofficial guide’ who wants to show us around. For which, of course, he’d expect a fee. Started out at 50,000 Rupiah but soon dropped when I said we don’t want one, we just want to be left alone. I could see Jill looking uncomfortable. I would’ve given him money to just go but didn’t have any. I walked off and left Jill to decide whether to give him anything to leave us in peace. She apologised and we enjoyed our visit unaccompanied [photo]. He presumably returned to the car park to wait for someone else to ‘guide’. And fortunately he didn’t slash our tyres or put a brick through the jeep window. After a couple of hours and nearing lunchtime looked for a restaurant the guidebook said sold apple and mango crumble. Couldn’t find it, but took solace in another guidebook recommendation for a hotel at our destination that sold chocolate cake. We arrived hungry and looking forward to a sweet treat. But none available. Uh! Doubley bad was the price of a room, GBP40. We didn’t stay. Stayed next door. Fantastic location, position and décor. The pool was great, the quality of the restaurant was excellent. At a price of £13.50 a night it was almost perfect [photo]. Except no air-con, only ceiling fan. We went for it. But that night it was hot. Very hot! Could only manage one night. |
