  22/01/2004 - Candidasa, Bali

Back on the coast and another unimpressive Bali beach. The shore comprises jetties of concrete sea defences, with beach cornered between jetty and shore [photo]. Original beach washed away when the coral bank was smashed up and used to build hotels and restaurants. It’s quiet and relaxed though, and no hassle. Possibly found the best room so far [photo]: location, right on seafront (pity no beach to step out on to!); position, next to and overlooking pool; comfort, air-con, fridge, hot-water, white sheets, clean bathroom, loads of room and a TV. After Ubud, TV was a must(!?) Kids been 3 days without, unable to watch their choice of movie from the growing library accrued since Christmas, when Leala got her portable CD/VCD player. We love it too: Finding Nemo, Monsters Inc, Lilo and Stitch, Sinbad, and others. Something to just veg-out to! Sharing our hotel with another family (it’s very quiet!). An Australian family living in Bali. The kids soon made friends [photo] and Ben has become particularly attached to the boys’ surfboards. In his new Bali-Hawaiian shorts he looks a real surf dude [photo]. Been relying on ATM’s to get cash. Unfortunately only one here and it’s not working. Under-funded for our stay and a trip to the more remote East coast, had to go in search of cash. Took 3 hours. Drove to first town, found 2 ATM’s. One only a local bank, the other national and accepted my card but wouldn’t give me money. Back at car was asked for parking fee. Oops! Didn’t realise I had to pay, had not a single Rupiah on me. Fortunately attendant let me off. Made me realise though, I had no other currency or any identification on me. After that I was hoping for no incidents. 30 minutes on found an ATM that worked. Phew!
