Had written off visiting Bromo after tours from Malang weren’t suitable. But, after finding price of a taxi back to Surabaya (for our flight back to Bali!) asked the price via Bromo. Unbelievable! GBP20 for a private tour: minibus and driver, pick-up from Malang hotel, excursion to Bromo, drop-off at Surabaya hotel, and we choose the time. Can’t believe any money’s made. At least the driver got some. Felt he deserved a 50,000 rupiah (GBP3.30) tip. Couldn’t’ve got home any less than 11 hours after picking us up and most of that driving. Given the rainy season, had to leave earlyish to avoid afternoon clouds. 6:30 departure meant we had our fill from the eat-all-you-want hotel breakfast plus get there in time to see something. Worked out perfectly. Clouds held-off. Stopped at a couple of viewpoints on the outer rim [photo]. Stunning views [photo]. Then drove down into the outer crater and to the base of Mount Bromo peak itself. Onslaught of horse hirers surrounded us. Hired 3, Ben and me shared [photo]. Short ride (fortunately!) to bottom of the final 249 steps to the peak and rim of the smoking Bromo crater [photo]. Harder breathing due to altitude. Cool bordering on chilly. Sulphurously smelly. Ben not impressed so soon went back down to the bus.
