  10/01/2004 - Yogyakarta, Java

Made it to Java contrary to Jill’s initial feelings. Happily, reassurances from a Java-based French/Dutch family, we met in Lombok, made Jill feel up for it. Plus we had no great desire to get back to Bali anytime too soon. Took another domestic flight, Lombok-Yogyakarta, all four of us for GBP90, this time in a ‘proper’ plane [photo]. A relaxed feel to the city, the cultural capital of Java. No serious hassle, and not threatening or intimidating. Crossed paths with twin sisters (Rachael and Kendall [photo]) from Southern Australia we’d enjoyed company with on Gili Air, Lombok. Leala spotted them from our Western respite from Indonesian streets, McDonalds. They’re great fun and such easy company. I think Leala viewed them with big-sisterly affection. They’ve also had a positive influence on her journal writing. She’s now writing without our nagging. Visited Borobodur described as a wonder of the world and likened to the pyramids [photo]. The largest temple in the Southern Hemisphere. Chose a sunrise tour which left at 5.00am so had to be up early. To be ready in time, had 2 alarms plus hotel wake up call. First alarm went off on time but Leala hadn’t moved the time back an hour from Lombok time so were actually up at 3.30am. Didn’t realise for 5 minutes. Tried to get back to sleep but deep sleep was broken. Paid for it later in the afternoon. Got to Borobodur for sunrise but cloud marred the impact [photo]. Also, I was a little disappointed. Although impressive, the size and scale didn’t live up to how I’d imagined it. The photo’s of the site give a picture you don’t fully appreciate when up close. The shantytown of tourist stalls and sellers outside the entrance also lessens the impression.
