  21/12/2003 - Malaysia & Singapore

Have stayed in style and luxury in Malaysia and Singapore. I pushed Jill one dodgy room too far when we first arrived in Malaysia, on Langkawi Island. The rebound was less travelling and greater comfort. So 3 and 4-star hotels it has been: clean white sheets, hot water, air-con, cable TV, and eat-as-much-as-you-like breakfast. Luxury! Of course, blown the budget from what was planned, but we're enjoying ourselves. Much more organised and orderly than in Thailand, and such an obvious British influence. Almost all people speak English and signs are in English, although they're also in the 3 other common languages - Chinese, Indian and Malay. A very multi-cultural country. Every town has its Chinatown, and Little India. Have travelled by ferry, bus and train through Malaysia into Singapore, stopping off at Langkawi Island, Penang Island, Cameron Highlands, and Kuala Lumpur. Not so hot as Thailand and being the monsoon season we've had our share of rain. Had to don the fleece jackets and long trousers when we were up in the highlands and even had to put the wet weather ponchos to use. Leala was not impressed with their street-cred' but they kept us dry. Had a Devonshire Cream Tea, and a decent cuppa at a tea plantation in the highlands too.
